Next Gen

Now in its 10th year, MIFF's Next Gen program for schools is here! Screening films in the languages most commonly taught in Victorian schools – French, German, Italian, Japanese and Mandarin – Next Gen is a carefully curated selection of high-quality, diverse and age-appropriate films that are not available online, not available on home entertainment, and not guaranteed a cinema release in Australia. So see them at MIFF or risk missing out! School bookings are now open.

May MIFF Members' Screening

Our MIFF Members' Screening for May is Highly Strung thanks to our friends at Sharmill Films and Cinema Nova.

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Scott Hicks (Shine) explores the appeal and intrigue of string instruments with a layered documentary that spans the globe, from the modest homes of the musicians who make up the Australian String Quartet to the picturesque violin-crafting township of Cremona, Italy, to Manhattan's Plaza Hotel - home to the Carpenter family, the self-anointed "Kardashians of the stringed world".

Juxtaposing the skill of craftsmen and musicians with the growing interest in the collectability of instruments by the ultra rich, Hicks weaves an involving story of passion, ego and skill.

10.30am, Sunday 1 May
Cinema Nova, Carlton
